Study size, design and population — a practical guide to reading supplement research responsibly.

Study design

Randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trials are generally considered stronger evidence than observational or laboratory studies.

Size and duration

Small or short studies can be useful, but results are less certain. Look for replication across independent groups.

Who was studied

Results apply most directly to people similar to those studied, at the dose studied.

Ingredient vs. finished product

Research on an ingredient is not research on a finished product that contains it. Responsible brands make this distinction clear.
